Story:

Synopsis: It is the early 90s, the world is changing and Amar Apte (Girish Kulkarni) is busy snooping on cheating wives. His wife Prachi (Sonali Kulkarni) who is quite vocal about her frustration at being married to an unsuccessful man, is stuck between defending her choice to marry him to her parents and getting Amar to be the man she thought he was. Then suddenly enter Neha (Sai Tamhankar), a sexy, lovely yet reserved nature woman who wants to be free from her cheating husband. While Amar tackles Neha's case, he grapples with an intense internal turmoil. Now his dreams and reality are out of sync, his marriage is frustrating. How does he find a way out? Pune-52 (2013) Review by FilmFest from India
The strangest film so far that I've seen in the Pune Festival is NikhilMahajan's PUNE 52 (52 refers to a lower class area of Pune. Beginningas an ordinary detective film set in 1992, the year of India's economicliberalization, it finally appears as if someone had shuffled thescripts of VERTIGO and FATAL ATTRACTION together and then ordered ahasty Susan Sontag re-write to achieve a further lack of clarity.

After the first half, when the hero wakes from a nightmare (as istypical in Hindi films) we release than some of the events we havewitnessed never really happened. But did he kill or not kill the womanwho pretends to be the wife of the construction magnate who he wasoriginally working for?

There is one excellent moment, with the would be wife standing almostin silhouette against the white light coming through the open door ofhis home with the detective' wife in lighter tones against the darkdoor, but the differences (or similarities) are never again fullyrealized. To describe the twists and turns of the plot would be adisservice, if not impossible, but it is necessary to state that thegrowing affluence of the detective (concurrent with that of India'smiddle and upper classes) is handled in one fine special effects shotas walls seem to paint themselves and crude furniture morphs intochaise lounges, etc. The hero remains trapped in the end, but by what Iam not sure -- either a political/economic nexus, his own weakness, orinsanity. I will stop here, hoping to talk with the director in thenext few days, who says at least that this is (although you might notknow it) "not a murder mystery."
