Aurangzeb (2013) Review by ahwaan_padhee from Hyderabad, India
In one of the scenes in AURANGZEB, Rishi Kapoor explains Prithvi that ,"Baadshahi Bhaichaara nahin dekhti " which essentially translates as"Kingship sees no Kinship" - the famous dictum of the ruthless Mughalemperor. There is a forced attempt in debutant director Atul Sabharwal'smodern action-crime thriller to draw references to the Mughaltraitor.Set in present-day concrete jungle of Gurgaon, it is about howan illegal business is run in the garb of a real estate consultancy.

Yashvardhan Singh(Jackie Shroff) plays the real-estate gangsterbusinessman who runs his illegal empire through a shrewdlady,Nina(Amrita Singh)and Ajay(Arjun Kapoor) is his son. A police teamled by DCP Ravikanth(Rishi Kapoor) and his nephew,Arya(Prithviraj) wantto break their stranglehold and send Ajay's lookalike Vishal toinfiltrate their gang and be their informer. Now there is a hitch!Vishal undergoes a change of heart and takes his father's side and thisjeopardizes the efforts of the DCP who has surreptitiously hatched asinister scheme.

What's interesting to note here is that none of the characters isinnocent, each one has grey shades and is flawed and Atul pulls it offwith impeccable dexterity. There is a deadly intertwine of drama andemotions in this convoluted plot and he unveils treacheries at eachstage without rendering any predictability. The first half is racy andpulsating where each of the character's establishment adds to theintrigue quotient. However, the film suffers from the curse of thesecond half. The portions become over-stretched, slickness fades andthere are a lot of loose threads which the director finds difficult totie efficiently. Dialogues are razor-sharp and the editing is sharp.Cinematography judiciously depicts the rampant industrialization of theDelhi-NCR region. Music is mediocre , barring the club-song Barbadiyaanlaced with techno-waves.

Aurangzeb boasts of an ensemble starcast and we get to see the veteransof Bollywood come under the same umbrella after a long time.Kudos tothe director for performing such an arduous task in etching out all thecharacters with equal flourish. At the top of the pyramid is RishiKapoor playing the unflinching self-serving cop who enthralls theaudience with a controlled act.The central character of the premise,Arjun Kapoor appears partly like the rebellious and wayward recklessbrute Parma of Ishaqzaade and partly like the introvert Vishal and hedoes it efficiently. Prithviraj is intense and he superbly portrays thebattle with his inner demons while the narrative progresses sluggishly.Deepti Naval , in a short role as DCP's wife makes a strong impact andher character is a sharp contrast to Tanvi Azmi's in depicting howhumanity can be put to shame in the greedy pursuit of wealth andpower.New comer Sashey Agha is bold and beautiful but her role isreduced to just being a mole in this male-dominated saga. While JackieShroff appears suave, his grey beard notwithstanding , Sikander Kher andSwara Bhaskar are under- utilized. Amrita Singh is first rate and sheadds a mean edge to her character.

With an appealing premise reflecting the gritty reality of the landdealings and the nexus of the corrupt politicians , bureaucrats anddishonest cops, this commercial potboiler has indeed good prospects atthe box office.i go with 3.5/5 for Aurangzeb.

Aurangzeb (2013) Review by swapnilagarwal1982 from India
"Kingship knows no kinship"- This ideology of Mughal king Aurangzebdefines the theme of YRF's latest 'Aurangzeb' (AZ). A directorial debutfrom Atul Sabharwal (writer of films like 'Phir Milenge'), Aurangzeb isa typical Indian masala entertainer from Manmohan Desai school. It issprinkled with all sorts of spices viz. action, crime, drama andbeau-coup DE skin-show. Not delving much into details of storyline etal, here are the highlights of the movie: • Performances: Stellar workfrom most of the veterans and new-age stars is the biggest hallmark ofAZ. If you think this is an Arjun Kapoor movie, you are mistaken.Despite a double-role (as evident from trailers), it is actuallyPrithviraj Sukumaaran (Malayalam actor of Aiyya fame) and Rishi Kapoorwho steal the show through their out-of-the-skin portrayals ofcharacters. Prithviraj is so accurate in his accent and mannerisms,it's hard to digest that he's a Southern import. Rishi Kapoor is achameleonic surprise with every scene! Arjun too is good in both theroles. His toothy smile, give-a-damn attitude and rugged look is acarry forward from Ishaqzaade. Debutante Sasha Agha (daughter of Paksinger-actress Salma Agha) is pure glam doll (acting comments – notapplicable). Could not help to mention her striking resemblance toAmrita Puri. Amrita Singh is in her normal shrewd avatar while JackieShroff is endearing in the limited role assigned. Nice to see thecouple reunited after the 90's hit Aaina! Tanvi Azmi does a Nirupa Roywhile Deepti Naval and Anupam Kher play a cameo. • Plot & execution:Set in the real-estate mafia gullies of Gur-gaon (city), the film takesyou through the lives of a real-estate king, judwa brothers, good & badpolice officers, lots of blood-shed and gives a glimpse of what cooksbehind the shining express-ways in our country. The narrative is adeptand implementation smart. While the first half sets the stage, thesecond half is about execution and pace. Dilemmas (choice between sapneand apne) of the main protagonist have been well captured while shrewdambitions of the 'actual' Aurangzeb are awesomely enacted. • Music:Even with less songs in the movie, Vipin Mishra and Amartya Rahut areordinary. Barring the pacy Barbaadiyan, no other song leaves impact. However, background score is good. • Flaws: Despite the high-voltagedrama, AZ does have its share of flaws and bloopers. The movie couldhave been a little less complex and dialogs a little less-filmy. Inall, Aurangzeb is a crisp, pacy action drama Bollywood got to see afterlong time. Dunno why YRF did not promote the film much! To know 'Who isreal Aurangzeb in the movie?', Streaming it, and Streaming it till the end! Youwon't be disappointed.  Rating: 3.5/5

Aurangzeb (2013) Review by Alekhya Das from Kolkata, India
AURANGZEB (3.5/5)

'AURANGZEB' is a well-made gangster flick!

It significantly raises the bar for its genre, with a cohesive script, great performances and technical finesse. Although a little loose inparts, it still is a superbly crafted action thriller with a heart.

The story is based in Gurgaon, the most modern boom-town of 'IndiaShining', the new frontier to be conquered by those who understand realestate. This city rose from a small town to a boom town satellite cityin just fifteen years. However, the law and order is yet to catch up.Under the guise of a respected citizen, Yashwardhan (Jackie Shroff)runs a parallel world where he is the Emperor. To bring down thiscriminal, the law decides to now think like a criminal. By plantingVishal (Arjun Kapoor) in Yashwardhan's world in place of his son, Ajay(Arjun Kapoor), his look-alike, the police (Rishi Kapoor & Prithviraj)roll the dice. But a sequence of events unravel something much morethan what Vishal had bargained for, as he finds himself in apredicament that puts him to a severe test!

Unlike the word around, this isn't a remake of the 1978 film 'Trishul'.As was told to us in history, 'Aurangzeb' is all about a world whereKingship knows no Kinship and where there can be only one Emperor. Thefilm's real strength lies in its sensibly written screenplay andwonderful enactments. The plot grips you tight from the start, and justdoesn't let go of you till it's over. The characters are well sketched, and are introduced seamlessly with no over the top show. Then there arehistoric references skilfully explained and executed throughout. This, embellished with some delicious twists and revelations, makes the filmeven more appealing. It definitely isn't the usual actioner Bollywoodfrequently produces (if at all you thought so). It is complex, realistically stylish, emotionally rich, and for the most part of it,intelligent. Yes, it has its share of flaws too. The second half doesget a tad draggy, giving more preference to personal indulgences thanwhat the larger plot sensibilities need. But that has very littlenegative impact on the overall experience as a moviegoer. You still arevery much interested in knowing what it has in store for you, next. Aspecial mention to the terrifically blended background score. It neverspoon feeds you, but always keeps the mood of the film more than alive.

The performances, as mentioned earlier, are top-notch. This is one ofthe very few Bollywood films where without any exception, each actor isup to the mark. Rishi Kapoor is truly among the finest actors we havetoday and this film is a testament to my statement. A raconteur, hischaracter has such complex shades, and he portrays them with amazingease. Arjun Kapoor is another fine actor in the making. He lacksmarginally on the expression front, but is somehow convincing enough topull off any character he plays. Prithviraj is very composed, and seemsto be the perfect choice for his role. Jackie Shroff, Amrita Singh, andall others do a swell job.

In all, AURANGZEB is an intelligent thriller that's rare in ourindustry, and a hope that shows way for better cinema in future aswell. Go for it!

Rating: 3.5/5
