Bombay Talkies (2013) Review by Ekansh Mishra from India
Indian cinema completed it's 100 years so on the same day when RajaHarishchandra was released in Mumbai, we have Bomaby Talkies by fourGreat director of our film Industry.

Four stories by four for famous director... Movie started with emotionsof a guy who refuse to stay with his family because of his orientation. Finally goes on.. Karan has done really a good job. Second from DibakarBanerjee is a story of a Lower middle class man dreaming big.. Afterfrom Joya is a story of a small child who wants to become a Dancer buthis father don't want to see him as a dancer as every common parentsexpect his son to be a pilot or something. Last was from Anurag Kashyapis story of a man from Allahbad wants to meet Amitabh because of hisDad's will.

If you like Drama movies then you are not gonna miss this. Some willsay that First is best, some will go with second and some with thirdand last one. But Frankly All stories were fabulous it depends onperson's choice which story he/she like the most. For me till now Ihaven't decided which part was best. I enjoyed the whole movie andfound every story fantastic.

At the end a song was there which covered 100 years of Hindi Cinema.Song was too good, it is so difficult to cover a long story of Indiancinema in five minutes but they have done tremendous work. Song was inlast just after "The End" but Don't miss that. At last but notleast....

"Har dil ki dhadkan hai apna 'BOMBAY TALKIES' ".

Bombay Talkies (2013) Review by Vikas SS from Mumbai, India

May 03, 1913 marked the day when motion picture was born in India, theday that Dadasaheb Phalke's silent film 'Raja Harishchandra' wasreleased. A bit of trivia there is that the female roles in the filmwere also played by male actors, and the acting talent was drawn fromtheater.

Till date, the influence of theater, and especially the roots fromSanksrit drama still play up in Bollywood's films. Surely, we love allthe extra drama, sometimes characters yelling out lines as if they wereon a stage before mikes were invented and the truly inimitable song anddance.

And a film that is supposed to pay a tribute to a century of celluloidadventures of Bollywood that have enthralled not only Indians but eventhose abroad, ought to have been better. What was supposed to have beenan extravagant celebration of cinema merely ends up like a moistfirecracker.

'Bombay Talkies' is about four independent stories, directed by fourreputed Bollywood directors, Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar& Anurag Kashyap. Any analysis of the movie would have to be broken upacross each of these four short stories, rather short films of 30minutes each.

#1 Ajeeb Dastaan Hain Yeh by Karan Johar has an urban couple Gayatri(Rani Mukherjee) and Dev (Randeep Hooda) whose lives go for a toss whena young gay intern Avinash (Saqib Saleem) enters their lives. The verypredictable ending and the men kissing each other has a shock value andthe story has actually no connection to the overarching theme of cinemaor the centennial anniversary.

#2 Star by Dibakar Banerjee is probably the better one of the lot. Ithas Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Purandar who has failed at business andemployment. Just then, out of the blue, comes an opportunity to act asan extra where he shares screen-space with a big star. This brings outthe inner theater actor in him that had starred in a couple of playsafter his father, also an actor had passed away. The animated enactmentthat he performs for his daughter at the end is indeed very touching.

#3 Sheila Ki Jawaani by Zoya Akhtar is about a little boy called Vicky(Naman Jain) who is attracted to the idea of dressing up as a girl andyearns to be a dancer a la 'Sheila' from 'Tees Maar Khan'. His father(Ranvir Shorey) is obviously annoyed at the idea. Nevertheless, the boyis supported by his sister. This segment has a cameo by Katrina Kaifwho extols the idea of following one's dreams. Still can't reallyfigure out whether there was even the remotest possibility of it beinglinked to the centennial.

#4 Murabba by Anurag Kashyap is quite decent. A young man fromAllahabad, Vijay who, as per his ailing father's wishes visits Mumbaito feed a Murabba to Amitabh Bachchan. He hangs around his Bungalowlike many others who stand there for hours for a fleeting 'darshan' ofthe super-star. His money is drying up and he needs to hurry! On astand- alone basis it would have made a good short film that on onehand, exalts the stars and then in the end, exposes the pointlessnessof all fan-dom.

Did you know? There was a real studio called 'Bombay Talkies' in Mumbaifrom 1934 to 1954 and produced 102 movies. It was a public limitedcompany that was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Founded by actorHimanshu Rai and financed by Rajnarayan Dube, some of the namesassociated with this marquee include Devika Rani, Ashok Kumar, RajKapoor, Mehmood Ali, Madhubala & Dilip Kumar.

The movie itself, however is absolutely underwhelming and leaves you afeeling of why did you even choose to Streaming this film. Some of thesituations in some stories are so contrived, convenient and at timesinappropriate too. One striking example of the absurdity comes from thefirst story, where an intern has the gall to make a first conversationloaded with innuendos to the assistant editor in his office. That isjust one of the many things that won't fit into any reasonable logic, outright.

Verdict: 'Bombay Talkes' is your typical pseudo-intellectual film. So,if you have a thing for parallel cinema, this is just the film for you. But, in the context of the occasion, it just not a film that paystribute to a hundred years of Indian cinema. Only for that reason, Irate it as film that struggles to even make it to 'average'. Themontage of all the stars in the end, which is actually a bunch ofgreen-screen stuff put together, doesn't help either. So, don't wasteyour money on this one!

Bombay Talkies (2013) Review by Gaurav Garg from India
First off - This movie is not for everyone. Walking out of the hall, Icould overhear conversations along the line of, "I thought this wassupposed to be good?"

In short, if you like movies from directors such as Vishal Bhardwaj,Anurag Kashyap, Dibankar Banerjee and the likes - you will love thisfilm. If you are into mainstream bollywood, you will hate it.

Also, although the movie is rated U/A, I would strongly advise you notto take your kids along. The first line of the movie is "I am gay, nota eunuch!". This was enough for the people with kids to stand up andleave. And anyway, this is not a movie for kids.

Coming to the four films, #1 Karan Johar - Trash. Most of the reviews Iread seemed to like Karan Johar's film, but I really didn't see thepoint. The film had little to do with Indian Cinema. People seemimpressed with the fact that it's bold. It was bold, but forcefully so.As if Johar was trying very hard to be mature. The result was that thefilm seemed unrealistic and over the top with sexual references andjokes.

#2 Dibakar Bannerjee - My Favorite. A failed actor (NawazuddinSiddiqui) who gets roped in to a movie shoot. Beautifully done, andSiddiqui was brilliant as always. You feel emotionally attached to thecharacter. I teared up. I am willing to Streaming this one over and overagain.

#3 Zoya Akhtar - Cute. A little boy who wants to be Sheila from 'Sheilaki Jawaani'. Nicely portrayed. The direction seemed novice though.

#4 Anurag Kashyap - Oh! the irony. This one depended more on thestoryline than on the screenplay like the others. I had highexpectations from Kashyap and he did not fail me. It's a brilliantstory and you will find yourself rooting for the character as he trieshard to meet Amitabh Bachchan.

    Overall, this is my opinion,

The Best - Dibakar Bannerjee Also good - Anurag Kashyap OK - KaranJohar Not too great - Zoya Akhtar.
